Steam on the North Norfolk Railway

The North Norfolk Railway, ‘The Poppy Line’, is an 8.4 km English heritage steam railway, running on the north coast of Norfolk between the towns of Sheringham and Holt. The line was originally opened in 1887 as part of the Midland and Great Northern Joint Railway (M&GN), and is the only part of that system in preservation.

The line was closed by British Railways in 1964, with work to restore it beginning between 1965 and 1968, and public trains restarting in 1975.

The line uses a mix of steam and heritage diesel traction, and almost half of the line is set on a stiff 1 in 80 gradient (12,5 ‰), making the engines work hard on their way to the summit! This video series focuses exclusively on steam traction seen from line side locations with a mix of residents and visiting locomotives.
